Challenge

A food company was hit by a cyber attack. For two weeks, company information was inaccessible and business operations came to a standstill. Forensics revealed that the hackers could have entered as a result of an RDP port being open, insufficient network segmentation, an unsecured backup, and failure to update software.

Strategy

First Lawyers has claimed compensation from the IT administrator on behalf of its client. The damage consisted of the costs of forensics, data recovery, personnel who were unable to work and paid bitcoins. The IT manager immediately involved her insurer, which made it easier to negotiate a mutual settlement.

Result

The parties have reached agreement on the compensation to be paid and the associated amicable settlement laid down in a settlement agreement. The IT supplier has paid a substantial amount of €140,000 to the food company.
